One-Year MSN to DNP Online Program Information

Nurses who have earned a Master of Science in Nursing can earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice in as little as one year through an online program with conveniently located clinical practicums, but they may be required to attend one or more sessions on site for evaluations and training. Online MSN to DNP programs typically consist of 500 clinical practicum hours and may include some of the courses listed below. Some programs allow students to choose a concentration based on their MSN program and work specializations.

Additionally, DNP programs typically require students to complete a project in which they develop a solution to a problem they've recognized during their clinical practicum. Students are responsible for conducting research that relates to their project topic and then presenting their evidence-based findings.

Evidence-Based Practice

Courses in evidence-based practice provide students with the tools needed to collect and analyze the different types of information applicable to healthcare and nursing. Students may learn to identify problems within healthcare and find relevant information to present solutions for practice. Courses may cover methods of research, how to evaluate and critique information, as well as how evidence can be applied to improve the quality of patient care.

Healthcare Ethics

Healthcare ethics courses explore ethical dilemmas that affect nursing and healthcare systems. Students may review ethical dilemmas and assess the theoretical models used to address them. Additionally, students may be asked to identify possible ethical issues and make recommendations for improvement. Some courses incorporate a discussion of public policy.

Information Technology

In information technology or informatics courses, students often learn more about technologies that are used to collect and store patient data. Students may review current technologies and their uses to support evidence-based practice and develop new healthcare policies or guidelines. In addition, students may review various methods used to gather, organize, and update data as well as how to maintain security of patient information. Other topics covered may include ethical, political, legal, and global informatics concerns.

Quality Improvement

Quality improvement courses provide students with a knowledge of the methods that can be used to improve patient care outcomes. Students may study systems change from a leadership perspective, including the application of evidence-based findings to initiate change and improvements. Some courses may focus on the use of organizational change theory and implementation science to better care for patients and ensure consistent quality.

Healthcare Leadership

In healthcare leadership courses, students may learn strategies for effective communication with the patients, peers, and subordinates that they might work with in various healthcare settings. Students may explore leadership theories as well as evidence-based factors attributed to successful innovation and collaboration in healthcare systems. Courses may also explore organizational values, dynamics, and culture that affect nursing practice and leadership positions.

Healthcare Economics

Healthcare economics courses explore the various financial and economic considerations involved in the management of healthcare organizations. Students develop their understanding of topics such as payment systems and financing strategies. Additionally, students will likely study the ethical implications of economics-based health disparities as well as how healthcare affects the global economy.

Admittance Requirements for a One-Year MSN to DNP Online Program

Online MSN to DNP programs that can be completed in one year require applicants to hold a Master of Science in Nursing, and some programs may require the MSN to have been concentrated in a specific area (such as nurse practitioner). Programs typically require applicants to have a valid RN license and a previous GPA of at least 3.0; professional certification in a nursing specialty could also be required. DNP programs have a 1,000-hour clinical component, and many require students to already have completed at least 500 of the clinical hours within their MSN program. Other items required may include letters of recommendation, certain certifications (such as the Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association), a statement of goals, and the completion of certain prerequisite courses, such as statistics.

Online Doctor of Nursing Practice programs can often be completed in one year if incoming students have previously earned a Master of Science in Nursing, hold a valid RN license, and are able to attend one or more campus sessions. DNP programs consist of clinical practice that can be completed in a location near students as well as courses in evidence-based practice, leadership, and ethics.
