Education and Preparation

You must have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited university that includes an educator preparation program. Educator preparation programs will consist of both course work and in-classroom teaching experience. Programs must be approved by the NDOE and fulfill all requirements for endorsement and outlined in the Nevada Administrative Code. Once you've completed the program, you'll receive recommendation for the needed examinations to apply for certification. If you've already earned a bachelor's degree that didn't include a teacher preparation program, you'll need to seek an alternative route to certification.

Exam

All teacher certification candidates must pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam and most must also pass the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching to apply for certification. These assessments evaluate the candidate's core competency in reading, writing, and math. In addition, future teachers have to get a passing score on a Praxis II Subject Area Assessment in their chosen area. For example, if the applicant wanted to teach special needs children in early grades, they would need to take the Special Education: Preschool/Early Childhood exam. Or, to teach Spanish, they would need to take the Spanish: World Language and Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12 exams.

Apply

First, the candidate must successfully fulfill the requirements of the teacher preparation program approved by the NDOE. The candidate must submit an application for a standard license, and submit needed documents supporting completion of education, preparation program, and testing. The candidate must pay the $180 application fee. The applicant must then complete a fingerprinting packet in order to provide the needed information for a criminal history background investigation. The standard license application can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks to be reviewed.

Renewal

Nevada licensed educators can renew their standard teaching license every five years and pay a $150 renewal fee plus $50 for additional endorsements that will be added. Renewal requires the educator to submit an application for renewal with proof of completion of 15 hours of professional development per year that they are certified during period prior to the renewal. Profession development includes continuing education trainings, courses, seminars, and workshops. A teacher may also meet renewal requirements if they should become a nationally certified teacher. If the renewal applicant has not met the requirements of renewal, they may apply for one six-month extension to help fulfill renewal requirements.
