Masters Degree in Kinesiology

Kinesiology is the science of human movement. Online master of kinesiology degrees are designed to apply biomechanics and psychomotor behavior in everyday life and health contexts. By studying the broad field of kinesiology, graduates can go on to medical school or continue into Ph.D. programs if they prefer research to practice. Also, if you require the flexibility of online schooling, online kinesiology degrees are much more common than related tracks like occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy

Many students who received a bachelor's degree in kinesiology choose to specialize as they move forward into graduate programs. In an occupational therapy master's degree program students work to become licensed occupational therapists. Occupational therapists help injured or disabled patients learn to perform everyday activities. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that occupational therapist jobs are growing faster than average. However, due to the hands-on nature of the degree, online master's programs are rare. If you are determined to make the career switch, there are a growing number of weekend degree programs and hybrid online and on-campus options designed to accommodate the schedules of full-time professionals.

Masters Degree in Physical Therapy

An alternate path for kinesiology students is physical therapy. Whereas occupational therapists help patients learn skills to be independent in everyday life, physical therapists focus on helping patients improve movement, resolve injuries and improve pain. Due to the aging population in the United States, physical therapy positions are rising fast. Once again it is rare to find a licensed online masters in physical therapy degree. However, if you are interested in physical therapy research rather than practice, there are more online Ph.D. programs available.

Masters Degree in Sports Medicine

Sports medicine degrees prepare students to help people improve physical performance, recover from injury and prevent future injury. Like occupational and physical therapy, a sport's medicine degree can lead to a job in the fast-growing fields like athletic training, exercise physiology, or chiropractic science. However, these master's degrees are much more readily available in a flexible online format.

Masters Degree in Exercise Psychology

If you are more interested in researching motion and exercise rather than providing therapy and training, you may want to consider a master's in exercise psychology. Exercise psychology, a relatively new field, looks at the psychological aspects of exercise performance. Due to recent growth in research linking physical exercise to general health, this field is destined to lead to exciting new research opportunities and careers.

Masters Degree in Sport Management

Some kinesiology departments offer online programs for sports management in which students learn how to manage organizations, marketing efforts, and human resources in a sports team or sports program. This degree will prepare students for an executive administrative role in the sports industry.
