Admission Requirements for an Online MSN Program in North Carolina

Prospective students should have earned a baccalaureate degree, preferably in nursing, and should submit transcripts that prove a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, many online MSN programs require three professional recommendations, a current and valid nursing license in the state of North Carolina, and GRE scores dated within the last five years. Duke University offers an online MSN program with eleven areas of specialization, including Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP). The number of credit hours required to complete this program range from 42-49 credits, depending on a student's chosen specialization track. All students are required to attend clinical core courses totaling eleven credit hours in addition to completing a mentored clinical residency.

Queens University of Charlotte

Queens University of Charlotte offers an online MSN program with a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) specialization and a combined Nurse Administrator (NA) and Nurse Educator (NE) specialization. Applicants do not need to submit GRE scores to apply for this program. Students are expected to take several common core courses that focus on topics such as health policy, research methods, and clinical practicum.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro offers three distinct online MSN programs, including an MSN/MBA in Health Management option. Full-time students in the Nursing Education (NE) or Nursing Administration (NA) concentrations can expect to spend seven semesters completing the curriculum.

East Carolina University

East Carolina University offers an MSN program with Nursing Education (NE) and Nursing Leadership (NL) specializations that can be completed without attending classes on-campus. East Carolina University also offers hybrid options that require minimal on-campus attendance. These hybrid specializations include Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (AGCNS) and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington

The MSN program offered by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington consists of two areas of concentration. Students who choose to follow the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track can take some of their coursework online, while students in the Nurse Educator (NE) track complete all of their courses via distance education. FNP students typically spend five semesters completing their program, which includes at least 600 clinical hours. Those following the NE track are also required to be physically present for a series of medical practicums.

Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University offers hybrid and online MSN programs in three areas of concentration. The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration is a hybrid program, requiring students to attend an on-campus session once a week. Students enrolled in the Nurse Educator (NE) or Nursing Leadership (NL) tracks complete all of their coursework online and must successfully present either a thesis or project in order to earn their MSN in addition to completing practicum requirements.

Winston-Salem State University

Winston-Salem State University offers two MSN programs, with the Advanced Nurse Educator (ANE) option being completely online. The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track requires on-campus attendance regularly, though there are online portions of the program.

Gardner-Webb University

Gardner-Webb University offers an online MSN program where accepted students can choose between Nursing Administration (NA) and Nursing Education (NE) tracks, each of which ends with a capstone project or thesis. Students are required to produce between 30 and 36 credit hours of graduate-level coursework to earn their MSN.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte offers nursing students three online MSN programs from which to choose. Students can choose to pursue the Community/Public Health (PH), the Nursing Education (NE), or the Nursing Administration (NA) track, each of which requires between 36 and 39 credit hours of study to complete.
