Education Requirements for Reading Specialist

The first requirement for a reading specialist is a master's degree. It could be beneficial if you select a Master of Education degree in Reading as it gives you a base in teaching literacy. Along with the master's program, you can opt for a reading specialist certification preparation program. The reading specialist certification program might include courses in theories of pedagogy, classroom experience, assessments, and language and literacy in its curriculum to prepare you for the career.

Reading Specialist Test Requirements

The following are the tests you have to attend for certification:

  • Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET): This four-hour test consists of 100 multiple choice questions and one writing question. This test measures your skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and information literacy.
  • Oklahoma Professional Teaching Examination (OPTE): You have to take two separate OPTE tests depending on whether you wish to teach PK-8 or 6-12. These tests consist of 75 multiple choice questions and 3 writing questions related to learning and teaching and classroom environment.
  • Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT): You have to take the OSAT exam in the area of Reading Specialist. It consists of 80 multiple choice questions and 1 writing question.

Structure of the OSAT Reading Specialist Test

The total time of the OSAT Reading Specialist test is 4 hours, and its passing score is 240. It consists of 80 multiple choice questions from the areas of foundational knowledge, the role of the reading professional, instruction, and assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation. The weight of each of these areas in the question paper is as follows:

  • Foundational knowledge - 11%
  • The role of the reading professional - 15%
  • Assessment, diagnosis, and evaluation - 20%
  • Instruction - 39%

The only written question in the test comes from the area of instruction and carries a weight of 15%.

Background Check for Reading Specialists in Oklahoma

The final requirement to get the certification as a Reading Specialist in Oklahoma is to get a background check. The first step in this process is to get your fingerprints scanned. You can take your fingerprints digitally at the Oklahoma State Department of Education or the satellite centers located across the state. As an alternative, you can also submit fingerprint cards. Once this process is done, the FBI and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will carry out your background check.
