What Can You do With a Master of Science in Nursing?

Clinical Nurse Specialists

Clinical nurse specialists are advanced practice registered nurses who provide care to patients as direct caregivers or indirect/collaborative caregivers. Clinical nurse specialists may also work in leadership positions, training, directing, and mentoring other nurses. Clinical nurse specialists are required to have completed a master's degree in nursing, and often need related experience and additional certification. A Master of Science in Nursing program provides students with clinical and leadership knowledge necessary for clinical nurse specialist responsibilities, and may also prepare students for applicable certification exams.

Medical and Health Services Managers

Medical and health services managers direct and coordinate healthcare services including departments, practices, and facilities. Specific management duties vary with position, but may include recruitment and training, goal development, compliance and budgeting. Employers may prefer candidates who have a master's degree and often require relevant work experience in management and/or nursing practice. Master of Science in Nursing programs focused in nursing administration provide graduates with leadership and management skills that prepare them for positions as healthcare managers.

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses who need a master's degree and national certification. Master of Science in Nursing programs with nurse practitioner concentrations give graduates the necessary education and practice to become nurse practitioners. Typically, nurse practitioners work in the same specialization area as their MSN concentration, such as adult, family, or pediatrics. Nurse practitioners often provide primary care including examining and consulting patients, identifying and diagnosing health concerns, as well as treatments.
