Azusa Pacific University

Azusa Pacific University's 104-128 unit RN to MSN program is unique in that students can choose both a primary specialization in advanced practice nursing (adult-gerontology, family nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric mental health nursing or school nursing) as well as a secondary specialization in education or administration. Their programs include courses in both advanced theory and practice and prepare graduates to advance their nursing career or go on to further research in a doctoral program.

Holy Names University

Holy Names University has a state-of-the-art simulation lab that allows students to practice the skills they learn in their online and on-campus classes. Students also complete clinical arranged with healthcare facilities near where they live. Due to the flexible nature of the program, students can graduates in 2 years with a degree that allows them to transition from nursing to nursing education, nursing administration/management, nursing informatics or care transition management positions.

California Baptist University

At California Baptist University students with an ADN in nursing have the option to complete a general Master of Arts in Nursing Science or earn their degree with one of a number of specialization (options including Clinical Nurse Specialist Adult-Gerontology, Family Nurse Practitioner, Healthcare Systems Management, Nursing Informatics, or Teaching-Learning Nursing). Depending on the applicants' previous education experience, their course takes 46-70 credit hours or 8-10 semesters.

California State University Dominguez Hills

Cal State Dominguez Hills accepts registered nurses who wish to pursue a Master of Nursing Science with a bachelor's degree in an unrelated discipline. Accepted students take bridge undergraduate courses in pathophysiology, health assessment, community-based nursing, principles of leadership, and nursing research, but they do not have to obtain a BSN before continuing on to the master's degree program. Students can complete the program in 3 terms (full-time) or 8 terms (part-time).

University of San Francisco

They offer both on-campus and 100% online degrees and provide classes all year long so that students can take the courses they need at the best possible. Students can enroll in the program while maintaining full-time nursing positions and still graduate in 2 years.

San Francisco State University

At San Francisco State University students with at least one year of RN clinical experience can move straight into a two-year MSN degree with a bachelor's degree in any discipline and high GRE test scores. The university offers both research opportunities and clinical experiences that can lead either to advanced nurse practitioner certification (in a variety of specializations) or preparation for a doctoral degree.

Western University School of Nursing

Western University of Health Sciences offers respected and flexible web-based MSN programs for full-nurses worried about juggling work, personal life, and education goals. Students meet friends and advisors by complementing their online coursework with weekend seminars at the Western University campus in Pomona, California. Their programs range from 49-56 credit hours, depending on the concentration you choose.

University of Southern California (USC)

The University of Southern California offers a 21-month program to prepare students with at least one year of nursing experience to become registered Family Nurse Practitioners (practitioners who care for all members of the family, from infants to advanced age patients). While this program is offered primarily through online classes, students get to develop a network of nursing experts by attending two on-campus intensive events.

How to Get Into an RN to MSN Degree in California

To apply to most RN-MSN programs in California students are expected to have a valid registered nurse (RN) license, an associate's degree in nursing science, and in some cases a bachelor's degree in any discipline. Students must also have at least 1 year of full-time nursing experience. Most programs require applicants to have maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 in their last 60 credits of coursework. To apply, applicants send in proof of their licensure, transcripts, a resume, letters of recommendation and (in some cases) GRE test scores.
