Gardner-Webb University

Gardner-Webb University offer a RN to MSN program that requires students to first gain admission into the RN to BSN program. Once admitted, a few master's level courses will be substituted into the BSN program curriculum so that students can earn their MSN degree. This can take students between two and four years to complete, and students will take a minimum go 36 credits.

University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers students an RN to MSN Health Care Leadership and Administration program. This program can be completed in an online format, but students will still need to complete a minimum of 420 clinical hours of experience prior to graduation.

University of North Carolina - Pembroke

Students at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke can enroll in the school's RN-MSN pathway. This program will require students to complete 157 credit hours of course work prior to graduation, 63 of which are earned from the completion of general education coursework. Students are not eligible to apply for this program until they have completed most of UNC-Pembroke's RN-BSN program.

Western Governors University

Western Governors University offers three different RN to MSN programs. The programs include the Nursing Education RN to MSN, Nursing Informatics RN to MSN, and the Leadership and Management RN to MSN. All three programs can be completed within 1-4 years, depending on the student's course load.

General RN-MSN Program Overview

Students on track to earn an RN to MSN typically take a variety of courses. Some of these courses include pathophysiology, health care policy, and primary care of adults.

Pathophysiology

Pathophysiology is a course that is designed to teach students about the pathophysiological responses and processes that take part in the human body. Some of the topics that will be covered in this course include acid-base balance, cellular function, genetics, and the maintenance of vital functions in the body. This course may also cover how the pathophysiological processes and responses change over the course of a lifetime.

Health Care Policy

A class in health care policy will prepare students for leadership positions in the nursing field by teaching them about the organization of health care systems and policies. This course will teach students about current health care policies, the creation of policies, and the implications these policies have on different organizations. Students that graduate from this course will be able to advocate for change where it is needed in the health care system.

Primary Care of Adults

A course like primary care of adults will teach students about the specific health care issues that they will be faced with when treating patients that are considered to be adults. This class will teach students about common illnesses, diseases, treatments, and the continuing care of these specific individuals. A primary care of adults class may also teach students about issues that may be encountered when working with adults from disadvantaged communities.

Common RN-MSN Admission Requirements

Students that hope to gain admission into an Registered Nurse to Master of Nursing Practice degree will need to have their RN license prior to application. It is recommended that students hold an associate's degree prior to application, as well as a 3.0 GPA in their undergraduate class work. Students will not need to submit GRE exam scores, but they will need to submit either a resume or CV with their application.
