Becoming a teacher in Wyoming is fairly straightforward. Requiring prospective teachers to complete a teacher preparation program, the traditional route to becoming a teacher in the state of Wyoming is to earn a bachelor's degree in education. Wyoming requires that teachers hold an Initial License before they can begin working as a teacher within the sate.

Education/Experience Requirements

The state of Wyoming requires that prospective teachers complete an approved educator preparation program through an accredited college. This program must include documented student teaching experience and lead to an endorsement-specific degree in education, as well as an institutional recommendation for licensing.

Exam Requirements

All teachers seeking licensing within the state of Wyoming must demonstrate knowledge on both the US Constitution and the Wyoming Constitution. For some applicants, certain college coursework may qualify. However, the majority of applicants are required to take and pass the US Constitution exam and the Wyoming Constitution exam.

Teachers interested in teaching specific subjects or age ranges may need to qualify and apply for additional endorsements. For new teachers applying for an Initial License with endorsements in Elementary Education or the Social Studies Composite, a passing score on the Praxis II exam is required. For endorsement in Elementary Education, prospective teachers must pass the Praxis II 5001 Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam, which consists of four subtests. The four subtests each require a passing score. The subtests consist of the Praxis II exams 5002 with a passing score of 157, 5003 with a passing score of 157, 5004 with a passing score of 155, and 5005 with a passing score of 159.

For endorsement in Social Studies Composite for grades 6-12, prospective teachers must pass the Praxis II 5081/0081 Social Studies: Content Knowledge exam with a score of 158. For Social Studies Composite grades 5-8, new teachers must pass the Praxis II 5089/0089 Middle School Social Studies exam with a score of 153.

Initial Licensing

In Wyoming, an Initial License is needed for new teachers. An Initial License remains valid for a period of 5 years. Before applying for an Initial License, check with the state of Wyoming to make sure that you meet all qualifications.

Application

To apply for your Initial License, you must submit a completed application packet, your official transcripts documenting verification of a teaching preparation program, and documented passing scores on the US Constitution and Wyoming Constitution exams. There is an application fee for applicants who completed an in-state Educator Preparation Program. You must also submit your fingerprints on 2 original blue FBI fingerprint cards along with a processing fee. Fingerprinting must be submitted in this format.

Renewal

Once your Initial License expires you may then apply for a Wyoming Standard Educator License. You must complete at least 5 renewal credits before being granted a renewal. These credits may be earned at an accredited college or an approved PTSB workshop. Submit a completed Wyoming Educator Renewal packet for a Wyoming Standard Educator License. Include proof of renewal credits and the processing fee. The Wyoming Standard Educator License stays valid for a period of 5 years.
