Vermont Special Education Teacher Job Description

Special education teachers modify and adapt coursework in various subjects to meet the specific needs of their students. Qualified special education teachers are trained to provide students with the time, care, and education needed including access to free and appropriate public education (FAPE).

Educational Requirements

The requirements for becoming traditionally licensed as a teacher in Vermont include completing a Vermont-approved teacher preparation program and receiving from the certification officer a Recommendation for Licensure. The Vermont Agency of Education has approved a number of accepted programs from regionally and nationally accredited universities. These programs will typically help you meet all other educational requirements, but it is recommended to major in education or special education or a related degree field. You must also complete a student teaching experience.

PRAXIS Exams

Vermont requires teaching candidates to successfully complete two PRAXIS exams. The first of which, after the completion of an AOE-approved teacher education program, is the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills test. This exam will evaluate teachers on their reading, writing, and mathematics performance. It is designed to establish basic competency in these three core skills. The PRAXIS II subject test assesses a candidate's specific teaching and subject matter skills. Although there are many PRAXIS II exams, candidates will only need to take the test required for their specific level and type of certification.

Completing the Licensing Application

Candidates must now complete an application. Candidates must ensure that their PRAXIS test scores are available to the AOE. They must also provide proof of completion of a preparation program and include the official Recommendation for Licensure to the AOE website, along with official transcripts, and fingerprints for a background check. An official Letter of Eligibility will be issued if the application is complete, and all scores, grades, and requirements are up to or exceeding the level of minimum requirements.

License Validity and Renewal Period

For the first three years of teaching, new teachers will be licensed with a Level I Professional Educator's license. After the three-year validity period candidates can renew this Level I license one more time, but most prefer to work toward a Level II Professional Educator's License which has a seven-year validity period. Working toward this Level II license includes things such as completing three successful teaching years and a regimen of continuing education courses.
