Modeling

From clothing to fitness equipment, models use their looks and personalities to create public interest in a wide range of products. If you are confident and comfortable on camera and work well under pressure, you may be suited for a career in modeling. Read on to learn more about this highly competitive industry, including what type of training you'll need to reach your goal.

Is Modeling For Me?

Career Description

Modeling is more than just walking on catwalks in Milan, Paris, New York and Tokyo. While high fashion modeling like this does make up a part of the industry, there are opportunities available for models of all shapes and sizes in many different types of media. Those with a passion for modeling and the fashion industry should be aware of the non-traditional modeling careers available. Plus-size models, for instance, are becoming a more important part of the industry. Hand, foot and other specialized models are also needed to showcase watches, shoes and other accessories in print and Internet advertisements. Most models have an agent or talent manager to help them book jobs and improve their standing in the industry.

Employment Information

If you're interested in working as a model, you should expect keen competition over the next several years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for models is expected to grow by 15% over the 2012-2022 decade, which is faster than the average growth for all other occupations. This growth is expected to be because of continued use of models to advertise products and services during this time period. Nevertheless, modeling is a highly sought-after profession with many more candidates than job opportunities. Young models, as well as those models who represent diverse races and ethnicities, should expect the best work opportunities.

How Do I Work in Modeling?

Training

Though working in modeling doesn't typically require any formal education or training, many aspiring models choose to attend modeling school. Here you have an opportunity to learn basic aspects of modeling, including audition practice, walking on the runway, posing for photos, hairstyling and applying makeup. You'll also receive instruction in acting and improvisation, voice and diction and assertiveness training. Attending modeling school does not guarantee professional modeling jobs. Many aspiring models find work opportunities by attending open casting calls at modeling agencies, entering model searches or contests, or being sought out by a talent scout.

Required Skills

Successful models should be able to move confidently both on the runway and behind the camera. As a model, you should have an outgoing personality and be comfortable traveling and interacting with large groups of people on a regular basis. You should also be able to keep up your physical appearance with diet, exercise and regular haircuts, manicures and pedicures.
