Addictions and Substance Abuse Therapy

Addictions and Substance Abuse Therapy Degree Programs

Due to the devastating effects of addictions and substance abuse, many mental health professionals choose to dedicate their careers to patients with these disorders. Generally, a master's degree is preferred, with many therapists completing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology or a similar field. In these programs students can expect the chance to work in a clinical setting and to learn how to interact with patients and treat common mental illnesses. Additionally, students can expect to study the theory and history behind the mental health industry. Course topics will include psychology, sociology, neurology, the nature of disease and addiction, drug therapies, professional ethics and more. Graduates will be prepared to pursue careers in hospitals and private clinics and may also establish their own private addiction and substance abuse therapy practice.
