Is Canadian Culture for Me?

Overview of the Field

The study of Canadian culture covers all aspects of the country's history, geography and people. Students learn about the influence of France and England on the formation of Canada's culinary, political, literary and artistic traditions, as well as its social characteristics.

Bachelor's and master's degree programs in Canadian studies also discuss Canadian-American relations and the influence the United States has had on Canadian culture. Many programs include a study abroad component, as well as French language classes. A Canadian studies program may include the study of Canadian history, politics and writers, Quebec studies and Inuit art.

Career Options

In addition to a career in academia, a degree program with an emphasis on Canadian culture can lead to a job in heritage investigation and interpretation, teaching and historical research. You might also find a position in international policy analysis or with the Foreign Service.

How Can I Become an Expert in Canadian Culture?

Bachelor of Arts Programs

A Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Canadian Studies program might include topics in Canadian history and literature, the Iroquois, media and art. Most programs require courses in French. You might also complete a second major in political science, international business, geography or history. Studying abroad is recommended, especially in Quebec, for a French-language immersion.

Master of Arts Programs

You may also pursue a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Canadian Studies. A working knowledge of the French language is usually required for admission, after which you may pursue topics in international economics and commerce, as well as comparative courses in Latin American trade and politics. Other courses may cover the study of immigration, commodities, diplomacy and public policy. You'll most likely have to pass both oral and written examinations, as well as defend a research paper on your area of focus.
