Career Overview

Russian culture refers to the history, traditions, arts, artifacts and lifestyles of the Russian people. Russians are known for artifacts, such as the matryoshka dolls, which are painted, wooden nesting dolls, in addition to major works of literature, classical music, paintings, architecture, ballet and philosophy. Well-known Russian cultural icons include Fyodor Dostoyevsky, who wrote the influential novel 'Crime and Punishment', and classical music composer Peter Tchaikovsky.

Career Options and Salary Potential

A degree in Russian studies or culture might prepare you for a career in government, journalism, business administration or academia. You may also find work as an interpreter or translator if you are able to demonstrate strong Russian language skills.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in May 2013 the mean annual wage for reporters was $44,360; interpreters and translators averaged $47,920 per year. As of May 2013, management analysts enjoyed a mean annual salary of $89,990, while area, ethnic and cultural studies professors earned an average of $77,550 per year (www.bls.gov).

How Can I Study Russian Culture?

General Study Options

If you decide to pursue Russian culture studies, you can do so at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Degree programs in Russian or Eastern European studies are available. There are also Russian language courses that combine cultural studies with instruction in the spoken and written language.

Undergraduate Programs

You can major in Russian literature and culture in order to gain an understanding of Russian culture and society. The Russian language plays a prominent role in any Russian culture curriculum and you may be expected to have a working knowledge of this language should you choose to pursue an advanced degree. Courses may include political science, literature, film, art history, religion and cultural studies. Studying abroad in St. Petersburg or Moscow may help you immerse yourself in Russian culture and practice the language.

Graduate Programs

Advanced degree programs in Russian studies explore the political, religious and cultural history of the Russian people and may be combined with Eastern European or Eurasian studies programs. You will need to be fluent in Russian to complete a master's degree program. If you wish to teach Russian cultural studies at a college or university, then you will need to earn a doctorate degree (Ph.D.). Most doctorate degree programs require fluency in Russian, French and German. You will need to write and defend a dissertation in your area of focus in order to graduate.
