Biblical studies involve an in-depth interpretation of the Christian Bible, including its history, teachings and literary composition. You may also study the psychological and sociological aspects associated with the Bible, discuss the Old and New Testaments, explore the life of Christ and compare Christian scriptures to the teachings of other religions. Depending on the how the Bible is interpreted, you may study it as a literal and factual reference book, or as a metaphorical spiritual guidebook.

Bible studies can prepare you for an array of careers, including church leader, missionary, historian and anthropologist. You may also pursue work as a researcher, writer or teacher.

Employment and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment opportunities for archaeologists and anthropologists, as well as postsecondary teachers, were expected to increase by 19%, or faster than average, nationwide between 2012 and 2022. During the same 10-year period, openings for clergy members were projected to grow by 10%, or about average, nationwide. Overall, individuals with master's and doctoral degrees, as well as those with strong research, writing and oral communication skills, should see the best job prospects.

In May 2013, clergy members had a mean annual salary of $47,540, while anthropologists and archaeologists earned an average of $61,420. As of the same year, post-secondary philosophy and religion teachers had mean annual incomes of $72,200 (www.bls.gov).

How Can I Work in Bible Studies?

Undergraduate Programs

Educational programs in Bible studies are available at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels. As an undergraduate in a Bible studies program, you'll have an opportunity to study the Old and New Testaments, including contemporary applications of biblical teachings, biblical history and methods of interpretation. Undergraduate courses might include topics in Church history, Christian ethics, world religions and ministry. Classes in systematic theology, personal Evangelism and Hermeneutics may also be included. Some programs require Greek or Hebrew as a second language.

Graduate Programs

Master's or doctoral programs in Bible studies provide opportunities for a more intensive study of the Bible, including the Book of Genesis and the Gospel of St. John. You may also learn about the life and letters of St. Paul or read about the Christian apologetics. Program requirements typically include independent research and completion of a master's thesis.
