Is Advertising for Me ?

Career Overview

Advertising professionals use a variety of communication techniques and resources to get products and services into the hands of consumers. Media outlets typically include radio, television and the Internet. On an average day, advertising executives, such as art directors, can be found putting together promotional campaigns for clients, generating ideas for campaigns and overseeing creative staff members that execute the campaigns.

Career Options

In addition to art direction, advertising executives can hold positions as advertising and promotions managers, account managers, marketing managers or public relations coordinators. Additional job duties can include generating media attention for clients' products and services, designing in-store displays and email ads or planning contests and special events.

Employment and Salary Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), art directors who were employed in advertising, public relations and other related areas in May 2012 earned a median annual salary of $85,390. How Can I Become an Advertising Professional?

Undergraduate Degree Programs

If you decide to become an advertising professional, you may want to consider earning a bachelor's degree in advertising, marketing or public relations. Once enrolled in a program, you might learn how to create advertising campaigns from the ground up, put them in place and evaluate their effectiveness. You may also study advertising theory, business management, design and marketing strategies, which can help you develop your organizational and communication skills.

Graduate Degree Programs

Graduate-level programs in advertising and other related fields of study are also available. For example, in a Master of Science in Advertising program, you might take courses in branding, interactive media, international marketing and media planning. You may also study creative and consumer development or conduct advertising research.

Required Skills

As an advertising professional, you'll need to be computer literate, deadline oriented and comfortable working in fast-paced environments, where plans can change quickly. A willingness to travel and work irregular hours to attend meetings and events are also essential.
