How Can I Become a Health Occupations Teacher?

Undergraduate Education

In high school, it can help for you to take as many classes in the health sciences, psychology, biology and mathematics as possible. If your high school has a health career and technical education (CTE) teacher, it could also help to get as much information from him/her as possible. At a 4-year university, you could get a health occupation education bachelor's degree. At this level, classes include classroom management, curriculum development and career guidance. Additional coursework can include preparation for certification examinations and a teaching experience. Health occupations teachers must become certified in all 50 states to work in schools.

Health occupations teachers can often begin by first becoming a certified nurse through an associate's degree in nursing (ADN) program. These programs often have online options. As a CTE teacher, you must complete a bachelor's program and some states require you to obtain a master's degree in education (M.Ed.) within a certain period after beginning as a health occupations teacher.

Graduate Studies

If you want to teach as a postsecondary health occupations teacher, Ph.D. programs in education are available. Oral and comprehensive exams, as well as a thesis, are often required to graduate. Postsecondary educators often write books and contribute with other public educational material.
