Commercial truck and bus operators are responsible for the transport of people and goods. As a commercial truck driver, you can drive for local businesses delivering goods, work for a trucking company doing long haul trucking or even own your own truck and hire out. There are two different types of bus drivers. In this line of work, you may choose to drive transit buses, such as city buses, or work as a school bus driver.

Employment Information

If you're interested in working as a commercial truck or bus operator, you can expect moderately good job prospects over the next several years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for commercial truck and bus operators is projected to grow between 9-11% over the 2012-2022 decade, which is about average compared to other job sectors. Replacements will also be needed for transfers and retirees. The best opportunities are expected for those who have a clean driving record and who are willing to work irregular hours.

How Can I Work as a Commercial Truck and Bus Operator?

Training

To apply as a commercial truck or bus operator, you won't be required to have a college degree. However, you do need a commercial truck or bus operator's license, also known as the Commercial Driver's License (CDL). There are vocational schools dedicated to training truck and bus drivers, which can help you earn your license.

The Federal government has strict regulations for bus drivers. You are required to have a clean driving record, and you must pass an initial written exam. Companies and organizations will offer training courses that are from 2-8 weeks long that also include behind-the-wheel sessions. You'll be expected to memorize schedules, safety regulations and State regulations.

Once you begin driving passengers, you'll usually be accompanied by another driver with experience. Companies that hire truck drivers also offer similar training programs but only for those who have earned their CDL, so you may have to undergo more classroom training.
