Frequently Asked Questions
What Kind of Program Is It?
The online EJD degree, pioneered by Concord Law School, is designed for individuals who have an interest in the law or whose careers would benefit from a legal education. It is a three-year program that provides a core of required courses, then offers students the freedom to choose a course of study tailored to their needs or interests. Graduates of the EJD program use their degree to advance their careers, expand their employment opportunities or increase their legal knowledge without having to meet the regulatory requirements associated with becoming members of the bar.
Today's economy puts great value on the skills and abilities that can be derived from a legal education. Knowledge of legal terminology, well-honed analytical skills and the power to persuade are talents that can be employed in a wide range of employment opportunities. It is important to note that Executive JD students will not be certified as meeting requirements of the State Bar of California to sit for the California Bar Examination.
What Are the Prerequisites?
Applicants who have earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally or DETC-accredited institution will be considered for admission to Concord's law programs. In addition to Concord's admissions requirements, all applicants must also meet the statutory requirements for prelegal education required by California law and State Bar rules. In general, students must have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average from their undergraduate work.
Concord Admissions Advisors are available to provide additional information on admissions requirements.
Concord's online admissions test is required of all applicants. Applicants who have taken the LSAT may also submit those scores. In addition, applicants must complete a telephone interview prior to admission. This interview is crucial to determining applicants' motivation, desire to succeed and suitability for distance learning.
What Are the Course Requirements?
The Executive Juris Doctor program is a 72-unit part-time program. After the first year, during which the EJD students take the same foundational courses required of the Juris Doctor student, there is a great deal of flexibility in course selection. In the second and third years, EJD students are encouraged to construct a curriculum plan centered on their interests and career needs. Those in the EJD program who do not pursue a particular track must complete 34 units in electives. Enrollees have somewhat more flexibility in their pace of study as they are not required to adhere to the strict guidelines of the State Bar of California.
