In Ohio, they are licensed to teach from pre-K to 12th grade. They plan lessons, teach lessons, and grade homework and exams. They may also provide some counseling and meet with parents. Topics health teachers cover for all grades in the state of Ohio include nutrition and addiction prevention. K-6 health teachers in Ohio will also address personal safety and protection from assault. Those who teach grades 7-12 in Ohio will also teach about venereal diseases and dating violence prevention. </p><h3 id="section---Education">Education</h3><p>Those who want to become PK-12 health educators must first earn a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in health education, health and physical education, or a related field. Students studying to become PK-12 educators will receive instruction in the following areas, as they relate to the state of Ohio: </p><ul><li>Learning Standards </li><li>Standards for the Teaching Profession </li><li>Standards for Professional Development </li><li>School Operating Standards </li><li>Value-Added Model </li><li>Requirements for the Resident Educator License </li></ul><p>They must also complete 3 semester hours of reading in their content area, coursework in substance addiction, and coursework on methods for teaching individuals with Dyslexia. Coursework for health teacher candidates will include courses on anatomy and physiology, nutrition, substance abuse, and teaching human sexuality. </p><p>Teaching candidates will also complete at least 100 hours field experience and at least a 12-week student teaching internship. </p><h3 id="section---GettingCertified">Getting Certified</h3><p>Candidates are required to take licensure exams in order to become educators in the state of Ohio. In order to become a PK-12 licensed health education teacher, candidates must first pass two Ohio Assessment for Educators exams: </p><ul><li>OAE Pedagogy Assessment: 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12) </li><li>OAE Content Assessment: 023 Health </li></ul><p>These assessments are computer-based and consist of 100 multiple-choice questions. The Pedagogy Assessment also consists of two constructed-response assignments: a case study and a work product. The passing score for both exams is 220. Candidates will have three hours to complete the Pedagogy Assessment and two hours to complete the Content Assessment. Prior to the start time of the exams, candidates will be given a 15-minute tutorial. </p><p>For the OAE Pedagogy Assessment, candidates will be tested in three primary domains: </p><ul><li>Student Development and Learning </li><li>Assessment, Instruction, and the Learning Environment </li><li>The Professional Environment </li></ul><p>The three primary domains for the OAE Content Assessment are: </p><ul><li>Personal Health and Wellness </li><li>Avoiding and Preventing Health Risks </li><li>Health Education, Literacy, and Advocacy </li></ul><p>Exams times are available year-round and by appointment. As of 2019, the assessment fees are $105 for each test. Candidates can register for their licensure exams at the Ohio Assessments for Educators website. </p><p>After passing both licensure exams, educators must then apply for a Resident Educator License, which is a 4-year license. The application fee is $160. This application is done through the Ohio Department of Education's Connected Ohio Records for Educators system (CORE). Candidates will need an OH|ID account. Through this account, they will complete the online application for a teaching license. This application is available on the CORE Dashboard. </p><h3 id="section---RenewalRequirements">Renewal Requirements</h3><p>The Resident Educator License is valid for 4 years. In order to apply for the 5-year professional educator license, the teacher must complete 4 years of the Resident Educator Program and pass the Resident Educator Summative Assessment (RESA). The application fee is $200. If the candidate needs an extra year to meet these requirements, the candidate may extend the Resident Educator License for one year.</p>
