Online MBA Programs that Take Transfer Credits

There are several graduate schools that offer online Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees and accept transfer credits. Some of the concentrations MBA students in these schools can pursue are accounting, finance, analytics, and leadership. Schools offering Business degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Online MBA Degree Program Concentrations

Many online MBA degree programs accept transfer credits. These programs, which usually take 1 to 3 years to complete, offer many concentrations for students to consider.

Accounting

Students who select accounting as an area of concentration for their online MBA degree will usually take at least 3 advanced accounting courses. These accounting courses cover subjects like financial accounting, forensic accounting, managerial accounting, and advanced cost accounting. Other topics could include federal tax code or fraud detection.

Analytics

The study of advanced analytics in online MBA degrees concentrates using data to identify problems, possibly by looking at past performance, and developing solutions to those problems. Students then evaluate how those solutions impact an organization. Typically, 3 advanced analytics courses will be taken to complete this concentration. In some cases, these courses focus on predictive or prescriptive analytics.

Entrepreneurship

Concentrations in entrepreneurship can take many directions. Some programs offer advanced instruction on business plans and finance. Others focus on business modeling and emerging trends. It is common for students to take 3 courses in this area to complete their concentration requirements. Identifying and analyzing business opportunities and making solid strategic decisions are important goals in this area.

Finance

An MBA concentration in finance can cover topics such as international finance, investment/portfolio management, and financial markets. This knowledge can be used in government finance, business/commercial banking, and business management. Like many other concentrations, 3 courses are usually taken to fulfill this concentration requirement.

Global or International Business Management

International finance, global marketing, global economics, and cross-cultural management are a few of the potential subjects covered in an MBA concentration in global/international business management. Other topics could include legal issues in global business and identifying international business opportunities. It is common for 3 courses to be completed in this concentration.

Health Care Administration

Health care administration courses cover subjects such as health care finance and operations. Other potential topics could include health care data analytics, health care organizations, and ethics in health care. As with many MBA concentrations, students usually take 3 courses in health care administration to meet the degree requirement.

Human Resource Management

There are many topics that could be covered in a human resource management concentration. Staffing, training and development, employment law, and conflict law are just a few. It is common for 3 or 4 courses in this concentration to be required for degree completion.

Information Technology Management

Information technology management is a broad subject area. Students may take courses that cover subjects such as innovation, project management, networks, and network security. Often, students will be able to select 3 or 4 courses from several options in order to complete this concentration.

Leadership

Concentrations in leadership often focus on group dynamics, conflict resolution, and change management. Other topics might include decision-making, problem-solving, and leadership theory. It is common for students to take 3 courses in leadership in order to meet the concentration requirement for their MBA degrees.

Marketing

Developing marketing strategies, new product creation, and branding are a few of the topics that might be covered in an MBA marketing concentration. Other topics might focus on e-commerce or Internet marketing. To meet this concentration requirement, it is common for students to complete 3 or 4 courses.

Common MBA Program Admissions Requirements

The schools that offer online MBA degrees have many common admissions requirements. The first step in the process is usually completing the application, closely followed by submitting official undergraduate and graduate transcripts. Applicants are often asked to submit essays stating why they want or need to pursue an MBA and recommendations from personal and/or academic sources. Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores may be required; however, these tests can be waived if the applicant meets specific standards established by the school and/or program. Non-native English-speaking applicants may be required to submit TOEFL or other English language proficiency test scores.

How Do Schools Determine Whether Students Receive Transfer Credits?

After receiving transcripts from applicants and, in some cases, a form requesting review for credit, schools compare earned credits from courses taken previously to courses offered in their programs. They look at course descriptions, credit hours, course outcomes, and other variables. If there is a strong similarity between previously taken courses and program offerings, schools may reward partial or full credit for 1 or more courses. Many MBA programs accept anywhere from 6 to twenty-four (24) credits, depending on whether the credits being transferred are from quarter-credit or semester-credit courses, and no grades are transferred with the credits. The decision regarding acceptance of transfer credits rests with the receiving school.

There are several online MBA degrees that offer a variety of concentrations and accept transfer credits. Some of those concentrations include accounting, finance, leadership, entrepreneurship, and marketing, and many of the schools have similar admissions requirements.
