What Courses Are Offered in Logistics?

Logistics covers the creation and management of systems that help companies to complete, from beginning to end, the production and distribution of materials. It includes processes from the acquiring of raw materials and their assembly through the distribution and consumption of the final products. Supply Chain Management

Analytical Methods for Supply Chain Management

In this course of study students will learn about the methods used in analyzing topics of supply chain management and logistics. Descriptive and inferential statistics, predictive analytics, and case studies are just a few of the topics that might be covered in this course.

Transportation and Logistics

As part of this course, students will study the issues and strategies associated with managing the transportation of materials on a global scale. What Programs of Study Are Available?

To prepare for a career in logistics, you can pursue degrees such as an Associate of Applied Science in Materials and Logistics Management, a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Supply Chain Management, a Master of Engineering in Supply Chain Management and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Supply Chain Management. You may be able to find associate's and bachelor's degrees that are offered fully online. Online courses operate in much the same way as traditional courses, requiring you to purchase reading materials and pass exams. Both traditional and online programs generally incorporate case-based learning tactics, allowing you to work with other students to problem solve different scenarios. Some programs end with a capstone course that is experiential and demands that you design and implement a solution to a problem.

What Certifications Are Available?

In addition to technical schools offering a variety of certifications, the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) offers multiple certifications including the Certified Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certified Supply Chain Professions (CSCP). After you are awarded a certification, you must maintain it through continuing education.

The Six Sigma certification is another widely accepted standard of ability in the field of supply chain management. You can achieve four levels of certification called the white, yellow, green and black belt. The certification requirements are different for each level of certification.
