Buddhist Psychology Graduate Degree Programs

Master of Arts in Contemplative Psychotherapy and Buddhist Psychology

This is a specialty master's program in clinical mental health counseling that takes three years to complete. The program requires a qualifying bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, or another similar subject. This program integrates traditional clinical counseling with the contemplative wisdom of Buddhism. This three-year program includes five Maitri retreats. Maitri is Sanskrit for 'unconditional friendliness.' The program also includes weekly meditations with classmates and small group tutorials. This program prepares the student for a clinical counseling career.

Master of Arts in Transpersonal Psychology

The M.A. in Transpersonal Psychology program is a two-year program where students study psychology mixed with the Buddhist spiritual philosophy. The program requires a qualifying bachelor's degree. The M.A. in Transpersonal Psychology teaches the student about the integration of transpersonal and wisdom principles of Buddhism. It also teaches the development and application of skills for the student's personal and professional contributions to the field. Some of the courses that will be included in this program are experiential learning, increased consciousness, spiritual consciousness, and creative expression embodiment. This specific program prepares the student for a clinical counseling career with a focus on spirituality.

Doctor of Philosophy in Transpersonal Psychology

The Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology is a three-year program where the student studies theories and practices of transpersonal psychology. The student has the opportunity to deepen their understanding of this transpersonal psychology with exposure to Tibetan Buddhist concepts with a psychological perspective. The Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology is designed for adult learners that have qualifying master's degree. This program should prepare the students to further their careers in counseling or life coaching with a focus on spirituality.

Earning a Graduate Degree in Psychology with a Focus in Buddhism

Students who have completed their bachelor's or master's degree could complete a psychology program with a specialization in Buddhist psychology in 2 to 3 years. While there are currently no graduate degree programs specifically in Buddhist psychology, the programs listed above can provide students with the understanding they desire through coursework in some of the following areas.

Psychology of Meditation and Mindfulness

This course is an introduction to meditation and mindfulness. It focuses on different scientific, spiritual, and cultural traditions within meditation and mindfulness. This course teaches students how meditation can help their future clients in many settings, including treatment of addiction, trauma, and stress management. After completing this course, the student will understand how to teach their clients how to meditate and practice mindfulness and why.

Contemplative Mind

The contemplative mind course is an introduction to the field of the contemplative mind. The students will study four areas. These four areas are stillness, movement, generative engagement, and relational/earth-based. This course will teach the student how to integrate these practices into secular life. The contemplative mind course will prepare the student to teach their clients how to integrate these areas into their daily lives.

Buddhist Psychology

A student who signs up for the Buddhist Psychology course will be introduced the student to the mindfulness of meditation. This course focuses on Tibetan Buddhist meditation and Zen Buddhist meditation. The Buddhist psychology course will instill tranquility, insight, and loving-kindness in the student. This course teaches the student to spread these in the world, especially in their practice of counseling.

Consciousness and Healing

A course in consciousness and healing will explore the psychology of health and healing. The consciousness and healing course allow the student to explore certain behaviors that enhance psychological, social, physical, ecological, and spiritual health. At the end of this course, the student should understand factors that attribute to resilience, self-efficacy, personal achievement, mindfulness, and spirituality. The conscious and healing course prepares the students to better help their clients.

Writing Skills and Research

Writing and research skills are an integral part of programs like these and these courses can focus on the basics of exploratory writing. The focus is to prepare students for their future in writing professional reports, whether it be on clients or for research purposes. The curriculum in this course will teach students proper grammar, sentence structure, paragraph writing, and essay writing.

Whilst these graduate programs may not focus specifically on Buddhism, it is a big part of their curriculum. These programs should provide students with a solid foundational knowledge in psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, spiritual guidance, and clinical psychology.
