Crisis Prevention Intervention Overview
The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) is a nonprofit organization that offers training programs in crisis intervention to companies around the world. The training covers techniques and processes for decision-making in the face of unexpected violent or aggressive behavior from an individual in any type of organization. The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® workshop is the organization's flagship train-the-trainer certification, for those who wish to teach these courses on their own. What Are Some of the Courses and Topics Covered in the Training?
Some of the basic topics covered in the training include nonverbal, paraverbal, and verbal crisis communication (all geared towards the de-escalation of a crisis directly with an aggressor). Nonverbal communication pertains to body language, posture, and facial expressions that allow a connection with an individual and assist in deescalating tensions. Paraverbal communication refers to the volume and tone of communication used with an aggressor. Verbal communication covers word choices and sentence structures that are most effective in crisis de-escalation. Other topics covered in the course include decision making, physical interventions, and staff fear and anxiety.
Who Should Take Crisis Prevention Intervention Training?
While anyone who might conceivably face a crisis situation in the workplace can and will benefit from the training, it is commonly designed for professions with a high risk of crisis scenarios. These professions include behavioral health, education, health care, human services, and service-oriented professionals. Organizations have seen a reduction in liability and reduction in workplace violence after encouraging the training among their employees.

Can I Become Certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention?

The Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Certification involves both the completion of the foundational course and additional education on training techniques and the effective conduction of training sessions. The certification course takes place in person and can be completed over the course of four days. For those who prefer to learn online, the first day session is available as an online course, though the other three days of courses must be completed in person.

Organizations can request an onsite training session directly from CPI, while individuals are able to register and join any public training conducted in their area.
