In some states, you may be required to get a license that is meant particularly for teaching adults. Others may require criminal background checks and completion of specific education requirements. Most states require some type of continuing education to maintain a license. </p><h3 id="section---WhatIsMyPotentialSalaryAndJobOutlook">What Is My Potential Salary and Job Outlook?</h3><p>According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), adult literacy teachers (who are grouped among GED teachers and other remedial instructors) earned an average salary of $59,810 as of May 2020. The top-paying employers for this field were information services, which paid an average salary of $80,640. The BLS projected employment opportunities for these teachers to decline 5%, which could result in a total loss of 2,400 positions by the end of the 2020-2030 decade. </p><h3 id="section---WhatAreSomeRelatedAlternativeCareers">What Are Some Related Alternative Careers?</h3><p>General education diploma (GED teachers) and high school English as a second language teachers have a lot of professional similarities to adult literacy teachers. GED teachers work with adults who have not completed high school to help them acquire the basic skills needed to earn a GED. English as a second language teachers work with students whose native language is not English. They help them build their reading, writing and speaking skills. Their focus is on helping their students expand their knowledge of the English language in ways that will be beneficial for employment and daily life.
