Those interested in becoming a Spanish teacher in Illinois must have at least a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and complete an approved teacher preparation program. Many prospective teachers fulfill this requirement by completing a bachelor's degree in Spanish education. This program typically includes coursework in the Spanish language, from basic skills to more advanced concepts, such as linguistics, literature, and conversation. Students will also take courses on methods specific to teaching a second language.

As part of the education requirements for all Illinois teachers, students must complete courses that cover four areas: reading methods, reading in the content area, cross-categorical special education methods, and ESL/bilingual methods. A list of pre-approved courses at many colleges and universities is provided by the Illinois State Board of Education. Students should check with their programs to determine whether the courses they ultimately choose will fulfill this requirement.
