Are you interested in obtaining a degree in veterinary science in Jacksonville, Florida? If so, you may not have many options as far as varied degree levels, however there are a couple of degree programs in the field available, which will be described below.

What You Need to Know

Few options are available to students interested in earning a degree in veterinary science near Jacksonville. There is an associate's degree program in veterinary technology and at least one doctorate program in veterinary medicine. The associate's degree program requires that students complete 73 credit hours of coursework. The program is offered through a partnership between colleges; students enroll in both to earn the degree.

In order to become a veterinarian, a student may complete a four-year doctorate program leading to a DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine). Though no bachelor's degrees in veterinary science are available in the area, if prerequisite coursework is met, admission to the doctorate program is possible for students having earned an undergraduate degree in a related field.

Associate's Degree in Veterinary Science

Florida Gateway College

The Florida Gateway College offers an associate's degree in partnership with St. Petersburg College. You must enroll in both colleges to complete the program, and you also need to work part-time in a veterinary setting. At Florida Gateway College, you would complete the general education classes, such as biology, English and algebra. You would then complete other online courses through St. Petersburg College.

Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Science

University of Florida

The University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine offers a DVM degree for aspiring veterinarians. The DVM program is split up into different phases. The first two years of the program focus on diseases, therapy, organ systems and animal study, and the last two years expose students to clinical clerkships in various specialties of veterinary medicine, like radiology and small animal surgery. This university also gives you the option to combine your DVM with a Master of Public Health (MPH), which is geared toward students who are interested in veterinary medicine as well as research and public health issues in a variety of fields.

In addition to the DVM program, you can pursue certificate programs offered by the veterinary college. There are four options: shelter medicine, international veterinary medicine, aquatic animal health and food animal medicine. You can apply to these specialized programs after you enter the DVM program, and courses are offered throughout the four years of the program.
