Entry Requirements
To be admitted into any degree program at JMU, students will need to complete one full year beyond Algebra II. The admissions department recommends the following high school math classes:
- Pre-Calculus
- Math Analysis
- Finite Mathematics
- Probability/Statistics
- Calculus
- Trigonometry
Algebra Functions, Computer Science, Consumer Mathematics, and Data Analysis do not count toward the JMU math requirements for freshmen applicants.
How JMU's Math Assessment System Works
JMU uses a math assessment system to make sure that each student is placed in math classes of an appropriate difficulty.
Taking math classes that are too easy or too difficult can lead to negative experiences. Assessments allow students to study math at a level that will be challenging but doable.
JMU utilizes the McGraw-Hill ALEKS Math Assessment tool. The ALEKS test can evaluate students' aptitudes in 314 different mathematical topics. Each test has 30 questions and usually takes around 90 minutes to complete.
Students can retake assessment tests up to three times and will have access to a review module to catch up on areas in need of improvement.
