Where Can I Receive Paramedic Training in Oklahoma?

Paramedic programs in Oklahoma include certificate, associate's degree and technology center training. These programs will prepare you for your national exam and for your work in the field. Expect to learn about current emergency medical techniques and protocols as well as how to handle emergency equipment.

What You Need to Know

Students interested in entering a paramedic training program in Oklahoma have a number of schools and programs from which to choose, all of which lead to the eligibility needed to take a national certification examination for paramedics. Programs are offered by two- and four-year public schools as well as at least two technical centers. Individuals may earn a certificate or associate's degree in paramedicine, or complete a training program that leads exclusively to certification eligibility, but no award. Some programs require that students pass a background check and/or drug screening prior to enrollment.

Paramedic Certificate Programs in Oklahoma Schools

Oklahoma City Community College

This certificate program was designed to allow you to get the education and training you'll need to qualify for your NREMT paramedic test. Although you won't earn a college degree through this program, you can apply your certificate work towards an associate's degree. The program includes a practicum that will require you to provide your own uniform and medical liability insurance. This program has been accredited by CAAHEP.

Tulsa Community College

If you've already passed the NREMT basic or paramedic test, you can petition to get advanced standing in your classes. Both options require you to take the EMT-Basic courses, but the paramedic program includes another 24 credit hours. You'll participate in a clinical practicum for both basic and paramedic levels. As of July 2012, this program was not currently accredited by CAAHEP.

Associate's Degree Programs for Paramedics in Oklahoma

Oklahoma City Community College

The associate's degree program at this school is much like its certificate program, but it also includes general education classes. You can take some of the classes at home through an online hybrid program. You'll still be required to perform your clinical practicum and other paramedic coursework in person. The program is accredited by CAAHEP.

Rogers State University

This school offers a few options that will allow you a little freedom in planning your studies. You can complete the general education portion at your own pace, but you'll have to take your EMS courses sequentially. The program is affiliated with several facilities, and you can sign up to do your clinical rotation work at one that's convenient for you. This program has applied for CAAHEP accreditation and is under review, as of July 2012.

Paramedic Technology Center Training

Gordon Cooper Technology Center

Another option for paramedic training in Oklahoma is to attend a program at a technology center. This one requires that you maintain 80% attendance. The courses will focus on paramedic science through classroom studies, internships and clinical rotations. The tuition at this school includes the cost of books and your work shirt. This program is CAAHEP accredited.

Great Plains Technology Center

This technology center program also trains you through classroom learning, internships and a clinical practicum. The program does have a dress code but doesn't include the cost of required clothing in the tuition. Your books are also not included in the tuition at this center. The program is CAAHEP accredited.

In Oklahoma, you can earn a paramedic certificate from Oklahoma City Community College and Tulsa Community College; an associate's degree concurrent with paramedic studies can be found through Oklahoma City Community College and Rogers State University if you want a degree completion program; and technology center programs are available through Gordon Cooper Technology Center and Great Plains Technology Center.
