What Are Transfer Credits?
Before we dive into the types of transfer credits UMass Global accepts, let's first define what transfer credits are.
Transfer credits are college credits that you have received before enrolling in your current school and that you can transfer into your current degree program.
For example, if you attended community college and obtained an associate degree, you may be eligible to transfer your associate degree credits into a bachelor's degree program at a four-year institution.
Doing so will prevent you from having to repeat courses and will enable you to graduate with your bachelor's degree sooner.
There are many ways to obtain transfer credits.
A lot of students gain these credits by attending college courses at one school, and then transferring the credits to another school later on.
That said, a large percentage of students also gain college credit by 'testing out' of college-level courses.
Several competency-based exams award transfer credits to students who pass the exams.
These competency exams will be the focus of this article.
Does UMass Global Accept AP Credits?
AP stands for Advanced Placement. The Advanced Placement Examination, or AP Exam, tests your knowledge of various subjects, and students who pass the examination are awarded college credit.
Students often take AP courses and exams in high school in hopes of gaining credit they can apply toward college.
If you have AP credit, you may be able to apply it toward your degree through UMass Global. The school accepts AP Exam scores of 3, 4, and 5.
However, it's a good idea to talk with an academic advisor and find out if your specific AP credits will transfer into the specific degree program you plan to complete. Exam credit acceptance is never guaranteed.
Does UMass Global Accept CLEP Credits?
College Level Examination Programs, or CLEP Exams, also help students gain college credits through testing. These exams are available to anyone looking to obtain potential transfer credits.
These exams are administered by the College Board, and UMass Global accepts CLEP credits as long as your exam score meets or exceeds the minimum American Council on Education recommendation of 50.
That said, all students with CLEP credits should speak with an academic advisor to find out if their specific credits will transfer into their UMass Global degree program of choice, as credit acceptance is not guaranteed.
Does UMass Global Accept DANTES Credits?
DANTES credits are more commonly referred to as DSST Exam credits. DSST stands for DANTES Subject Standardized Tests.
DSST Examinations are administered by Prometic. They are available to anyone, student or working adult, who is looking to obtain college credits by nontraditional means.
UMass Global accepts most DSST Exam credit as long as it meets the American Council on Education minimum score recommendation of 400.
Again, check with an academic advisor for specific information and to find out if your credits will transfer into your program. Do not assume your credits will be accepted, as there are no guarantees.
Does UMass Global Accept Other Kinds of Transfer Credits?
In addition to AP, CLEP, and DANTES credits, you may be wondering what other types of transfer and alternative credits UMass Global accepts.
The school accepts most coursework completed at other regionally or nationally accredited institutions. It also accepts credits for military service and specialized training.
You can also gain credit for prior learning via portfolio assessment or by passing end-of-course exams for specific UMass Global courses.
Depending on your degree program, you may be able to receive course credit for holding specific certifications or completing workforce-specific training. Check with an academic advisor to find out more.
You can also receive credit by requesting an evaluation of equivalency for any course. You will be assessed on a one-on-one basis using guidelines established by the American Council on Education.
Finally, transfer credits obtained through other equivalency exams may be accepted. These exams include the International Baccalaureate (IB) Examinations and the Defense Language Proficiency (DLAT/DLPT) Examinations.
All transfer credits are subject to approval by the school, and acceptance is not guaranteed. Discuss your specific transfer credits with an academic advisor.
