Colleges That Accept The Most CLEP Credits

There are a variety of different colleges that accept CLEP credits. Learn more about important information like what CLEP credits are, how to earn them, and the schools that will accept them.

CLEP credits can be earned from exams that provide students the opportunity to earn college credit without actually taking college courses. These exams typically cost $89, and this fee is usually non-returnable.

What Are CLEP Credits?

There are more than 2,900 colleges and universities in the United States that are known to accept CLEP credits. CLEP is an abbreviation that stands for College Level Examination Program. These exams cover common introductory level college material and help students to earn college credit in a way that is inexpensive compared to traditional routes. CLEP credits are only for certain people who have acquired previous experience or knowledge in the subject area of a college course, such as business. This previous experience or learning could come form a variety of different circumstances such as taking advanced classes while attending high school, the completion of non-credit courses, taking an independent study, completing online coursework, reading textbooks, or even through on-the-job training.

How Do I Earn CLEP Credits

CLEP credits can be earned by taking one of 34 different exams that are available for those individuals who are planning to enter into college. These exams can be taken at specified exam centers which can be colleges, universities, or other testing locations. Exams can only be taken in a certain subject area a maximum of once every three months, though students can take multiple exams in different subject areas without having to worry about how much time has passed from test to test. The different subject areas available for students to test in include composition and literature, science and math, world languages, history and social sciences, and business.

Which Schools Accept the Highest Number of CLEP Credits?

There are quite a few universities and colleges in the United States that accept CLEP credits, but some schools accept more credits than others. Some of the schools that accept the highest number of CLEP credits include:

  • Purdue University - unlimited credits can be transferred as long as students take at least 32 credits at this university
  • University of Massachusetts - 75 credits can transfer
  • University of Arizona - 60 units can transfer

What Should I Know About the CLEP Exams?

There are over 1,800 testing centers in the United States which students can choose to go to in order to take the CLEP exams. These tests are taken on computers at the designated exam centers, and students must schedule to take their exams in advance. Scheduling for these tests can be done in one of two ways, online either on the College Board site or through a local university or college. The test typically lasts between 90 and 120 minutes in total. When students arrive at the testing center the day that the exam is going to take place, they will need to have their registration ticket on hand and printed out along with a valid source of identification that has the same name on it as the registration ticket. The exam questions will appear in a multiple choice format and will be in the subject area that the student has chosen.
