Fordham University

The Fordham Graduate School of Social Service offers a Ph.D. program in social work with specializations in social policy and social work practice. The program comprises 48 hours of coursework that can be completed in two years. The social policy track involves learning core courses such as social work education, social policy implementation, and poverty and race. The social work practice concentration includes areas of study such as theories of social work practice and social work education. Students in both tracks are required to take courses in statistics. The overall program, which also includes preparing, submitting and passing a dissertation, typically takes four years to complete, or longer in some cases.

New York University

The New York University Silver School of Social Work provides a Ph.D. program comprising 38 credit hours and 16 courses that take up to three years to complete. Candidates are required to complete eight core social work courses, which include topics such as history of social work and macro level theories in the social sciences. They must also take three courses in their chosen methodological specialization, three in any one of four areas of expertise (mental health, global social welfare, poverty, and children and family), and two that are designed to prepare them for a career in education. The program must be completed within seven years of enrollment.

Columbia University

The Columbia University School of Social Work offers a 45 to 50-credit Ph.D. program that includes two years of coursework. Students are expected to take a mandatory course in social welfare and social work, two courses in social work method, seven in research methodology and statistics, and three in social or behavioral sciences. They must also demonstrate expertise in any one of a wide range of topic areas that includes family and child policy, mental health services, and HIV/AIDS. The program must be completed in seven years.

City University of New York - Hunter College

The Ph.D. program in social welfare from the Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work comprises 39 hours of coursework that takes about three years to complete. The first year of the curriculum focuses on core coursework in topics such as social policy, organizational theory, and statistics. Candidates must pass the first of two qualifying exams at the end of this year, in order to gain admittance to the second year where they are required to take the remaining core courses along with some elective subjects. The electives continue into the third year at the end of which the second qualifying exam is held. The entire program takes about five years to complete.

Yeshiva University

Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Work offers a 60-credit Ph.D. program in social welfare that is tailored for the working professional. The coursework can be completed in three years. The first two years of the program involves learning courses such as history and philosophy of social work, social welfare policy, social work practice theories, and qualitative data analysis. The second and third years focus on electives, and candidates must choose three from topic areas such as evidence-based mental health practice, drugs, alcohol, and immigration.

Admission Requirements and Prerequisites for Ph.D. Program in Social Work

A candidate who wishes to enroll in a Ph.D. program in social work is commonly required to have undertaken prior coursework in the subject. While an undergraduate degree will suffice in some cases, a master's degree in social work or a related subject is viewed more favorably. Colleges also seek a minimum grade point average (GPA) of around 3.0 for undergraduate and 3.0-3.5 for graduate coursework. Graduate record examination (GRE) scores may or may not be necessary. Other requirements include a personal statement, official educational transcripts, detailed resume, writing sample, letters of recommendation, and an interview process.

New York City has several educational institutions that provide a Ph.D. program in social work. These degrees comprise a wide range of coursework that takes up to three years to complete. The final part of achieving the degree is to prepare and submit a dissertation which may require an additional four years, or more.
