Job Description

Private school teachers teach in non-public schools. The state of Ohio has two main types of private schools: Chartered Non-public Schools and Non-Chartered, Non-tax Schools. Chartered schools are under the province of the Ohio Department of Education and must adhere to the state's educational standards. Non-chartered schools are religious educational institutions that are not chartered by the state of Ohio.

Education

Chartered Non-public School

In order to teach in a chartered non-public school, one must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited school. This degree should be related to the subject one would like to teach. A degree in education, which often includes a teacher preparation program, is recommended, but not necessary.

Chartered Non-public School Exceptions

A bachelor's degree is not required in order to teach some subjects at chartered non-public schools: world languages, music, religion, computer technology or fine arts. In order to teach one of these subjects, candidates lacking a bachelor's degree must prove one of the following:

  • They have sufficient knowledge and skill to teach the subject.
  • They have three years of teaching in a public or non-public school.
  • They have completed a teaching training program.

Non-chartered, Non-Tax Schools

Non-chartered, non-tax schools have more varied standards. While a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution would be sufficient, a diploma from a bible college or institute would also be sufficient.

Getting Certified

The required exams will depend upon the grade level and the subject matter in which one is becoming certified to teach.
