They must also enroll in a teacher preparation program that has been approved by the Louisiana Board of Education; there are three options to complete this requirement. </p> <p>Those who have employment as a full-time teacher can receive the Practitioner 1 License by enrolling in a state-approved Practitioner Teacher Program, which includes intensive coursework in areas such as classroom management and education methods. </p> <p>Those who do not have a full-time teaching position can choose to complete a state-approved teacher preparation program that leads to a certificate (for the Practitioner 2 License) or leads to a master's degree (for the Practitioner 3 License). Both options include a blend of coursework and fieldwork as a student teacher. </p> <h3 id="section---CompleteExamRequirements">Complete Exam Requirements</h3> <p>Prospective teachers in an alternate teaching preparation program must take and pass the Praxis Core exams in reading, writing, and mathematics. The Louisiana Board of Education accepts the ACT (minimum score of 22) or SAT (minimum score of 1030) in place of the Praxis Core. Those who choose to complete a master's degree program may be exempt from this requirement. </p> <p>All prospective teachers must take the Principles of Learning and Teaching exam for the grade level they plan to teach. For example, those planning to teach elementary school should take the Principles of Learning and Teaching exam for grades K-6. </p> <p>One content exam covering the teacher's subject area is also required. For example, those who wish to teach history in grades 4-8 should take the Middle School Social Studies content exam. </p> <h3 id="section---FulfillRenewalRequirements">Fulfill Renewal Requirements</h3> <p>Each Practitioner License is valid for one year and can be renewed annually for up to three years as teachers complete their requirements. To renew the Practitioner 1 License, teachers must show progress in their state-approved program by completing at least six semester hours or the equivalent. Those who have either the Practitioner 2 or Practitioner 3 License must complete nine semester hours in their state-approved program. </p> <h3 id="section---ObtainProfessionalCertification">Obtain Professional Certification</h3> <p>All above requirements must be completed in three years.
