Online Audiology Courses

As an audiology professional, you'd study the causes and treatments of hearing loss and work with deaf or hearing-impaired individuals. Although not especially common, online audiology courses are available that can help you earn a degree from home. Read on for more information about education and potential salary. Schools offering Health Science degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What Careers Can I Pursue with Online Audiology Courses?

Audiologists are professionals who work with individuals with hearing or balance problems, as well as other issues related to the ears. They diagnose problems and develop treatment plans. All 50 states require audiologists to be licensed; a master's degree is the minimal educational requirement for licensure, but as of 2009, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 18 states require a doctorate (www.bls.gov). This graduate program generally takes four years to complete and leads to a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.). Speech-language pathology is another career option, which also requires a master's degree at minimum for licensure.

In 2009, the median annual wages for an audiologist were $66,850, according to the BLS. Employment in this field is expected to increase 25% between 2008 and 2018, which is well above the national average for all occupations. Speech-language pathologists earned a similar mean annual salary of $68,350 for the same year and can expect a faster-than-average employment growth of 19% for the same time period, also per the BLS.

Are Online Courses Available to Me?

Although not exceptionally common, a handful of colleges and universities offer online audiology courses. At the undergraduate level, you can take online audiology courses as part of a bachelor's degree in communicative disorders. This degree will prepare you for the graduate study necessary to become an audiologist or speech-language pathologist. Online courses in this program may include language, speech and hearing development; communication disorders; developmental phonology; sign language; and basic audiology.

Online pre-professional programs are also available that prepare you for graduate study in audiology or speech pathology. Such programs don't lead to a degree, and you must generally already have a bachelor's degree to enroll.

At the graduate level, a Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology is available online, which includes the study of audiology topics. Hybrid programs are also available that lead to a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Outreach; such programs allow you to complete a small amount of your coursework via distance education, but do require on-campus participation. If you are a practicing audiologist with a master's degree and at least four years of clinical experience, you can also earn your Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) online. Such programs are designed to allow audiologists to enhance their skills and education while maintaining a full-time practice.

How Do Online Courses Work?

You'll log in to the school's content management system to access lectures, video demonstrations, required readings and clinical projects. You'll also turn in assignments and take tests online. To communicate with instructors and other students, you'll use Web chat, e-mail or online discussion boards. You may be required to purchase textbooks to supplement online materials, and some programs require you to be present for graduation.
