1 Year Master's in Healthcare Administration Programs

There are several online Master's in Healthcare Administration degree programs available that can be completed in 12 months. Explore a handful of common courses for these programs, as well as common admissions requirements for potential students.

How to Earn a 1-Year Master's in Healthcare Administration

Master's in Healthcare Administration (MHA) degree programs that can be completed in 1 year are commonly available in an online format and may be offered as an accelerated or flex-path learning option, depending on the school. While coursework can be completed fully online for these programs, some schools may offer optional internship opportunities for hands-on learning in the field of healthcare administration. Several 1-year MHA degree programs conclude with a capstone course and may include coursework in a range of common topics discussed in more detail below.

Healthcare Policy

Courses in healthcare policy provide students with an overview of the various legal, regulatory, and political issues involved in health policy. Students examine how these issues affect healthcare organizations, strategies used for regulatory compliance, and ways to use policy to stimulate improvement in an organization. These courses may explore policies and issues at the local, state, federal, and even international levels. Other course topics for these classes may include health economics, healthcare reform, effects of policy on healthcare delivery, and individual rights in healthcare.

Healthcare Finance

Courses in healthcare finance may go by a variety of names and include additional subjects, such as managerial accounting, reimbursement, and financial management. However, these courses typically focus on the financial aspects specific to the field of healthcare and the skills in the subject that healthcare managers need. Students in these courses typically gain an understanding of financial concepts and the applications of healthcare finance. Specific topics for these courses may include, but are not limited to, managing cost, reimbursement methodologies, financial statements, insurance, revenue cycling management, and investments.

Organizational Behavior/Leadership

Some MHA programs may offer a general course in leadership that explores leadership theories, but several MHA programs provide students with a course specifically in organizational leadership and/or behavior. These courses examine organizational structure and communication, as well as the role of management to initiate change and/or improve human performance. Some of these courses may include topics in ethics and/or management and leadership skills specific to the field of healthcare. Other topics students may discuss include employee commitment, organizational accountability, conflict negotiation, and motivation.

Managerial Epidemiology

Epidemiology examines the prevention and control of various diseases and courses in managerial epidemiology explores how management plays a roll in this process. Students may study the best management methods and strategies to prevent disease, foster health, and plan health services. Students also learn basic epidemiologic concepts and how these concepts affect marketing, policy, and more. Depending on the course, students may use case studies and other learning tools to also explore topics in statistics, the distribution of health, and quality measures of health.

Healthcare Research Methods

Courses in healthcare research methods examine common research methods specific to the field of healthcare, including the computer analysis of data. Students may also examine literature in the field, methods for research design, and ethics in healthcare research. Some courses might help develop students' report writing and/or require students to complete a research project where they identify a problem, collect and analyze data, and report to management. Other topics may include sampling theory, quantitative vs. qualitative research, and univariate vs. multivariate research methods.

Admittance Requirements for 1-Year Master's in Healthcare Administration Programs

Students interested in applying to a 1-year MHA program need to have at least a bachelor's degree, but this degree does not typically have to be in a specific subject area. MHA degree programs typically do not require applicants to take the GRE or GMAT exams, but some may have a minimum GPA requirement. This minimum GPA requirement may be around a 2.7 or higher, and students who do not meet this requirement might still be able to apply, but may need to meet additional admissions requirements. For example, students with a 2.30 to 2.69 GPA may need to also provide a letter of intent, undergo an interview process, and/or make a 3.0 GPA the first semester of the program. Depending on the program, applicants could be required to submit their transcripts and/or a resume or CV with their application.

Students in 1-year MHA degree programs can usually take their coursework online and will typically take classes in research methods, epidemiology, healthcare policy and organizational behavior. Applicants to these programs need a bachelor's degree and may have the chance to participate in hands-on internship opportunities if they would like.
