At What Levels Are Programs Offered?

In addition to on-campus associate's degrees in business communications, you can pursue an Associate in Science in Business Administration online, which includes courses in effective speech and writing, rhetoric and composition and small group communication. An A.S. in Business Marketing program is also available online. To earn that degree, you'd take courses in business communications, technical writing and composition.

Bachelor's degrees in business or business administration are also available online, which may lead to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). A Bachelor of Science in Media Business is also available online. Some of the online program options at the bachelor's level are degree-completion programs, designed for students who have already earned an associate's degree. Communications courses offered at this level can include organizational communication, conflict resolution and negotiation, and effective writing and speaking.

At the graduate level, you can pursue an online Master of Business Administration (MBA), which typically includes a course in business communications, professional communication or managerial communications within the core curriculum. An online MBA generally takes 2-3 years to complete. Online doctoral degrees in business are less common.

How Does Online Learning Compare to Traditional Programs?

Many of the degree programs found online are modeled after the campuses' traditional programs. They often include the same courses and may even be taught by the same instructors. You typically use a course website program, such as Blackboard or WebCT, to access lectures, participate in class discussions, turn in assignments and take exams.

You'll need a computer and Internet connection to access online courses and an e-mail account to communicate with instructors and fellow classmates. Web chats, discussion forums and even video conferencing may also be used for communication. Some courses may require you to purchase textbooks, while others make all course content available online.

What Will I Learn In These Programs?

On-campus business communications degrees tend to focus on business principles, communication skills and computer applications. You'll learn these same things in online business programs, although each program, school and degree level is likely to offer slightly different courses and specializations. If you're interested in business communications, look for online business programs that offer courses in written communications, effective speaking, operational communications, technical writing or business writing.

A written communication for business course might include themes of presentations, brainstorming strategies and self-assessments. If you take a communication in business course, you could learn about verbal and nonverbal communications, listening skills and constructive criticism. A technical writing course may cover concepts such as using sources, critical thinking and revisions in business writing.
