As an Internet marketing manager, you handle your company's Internet advertising and sales. You're also responsible for managing other employees working on the company's Internet marketing campaign. It's your job to ensure the company's brand is recognized online and that the marketing is effective in its online setting. You also must coordinate your marketing efforts with other departments within the company, such as advertising and accounting.

Job Duties

Specific job duties you may handle include directing other marketing team members towards productive tasks, researching online sales trends, identifying key customer segments, planning marketing campaigns, developing pricing strategies, studying the competition, and monitoring your marketing plan's effectiveness. You may be required to use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques, social media outlets, and other online methods to develop your marketing campaigns and materials. You may also be required to do some Web page optimization and design.

During the course of your work, you may meet with advertising and promotion managers to coordinate marketing efforts between all company departments. It may be part of your job to hire, train, and dismiss employees. You may also work on budgeting a company's marketing campaigns to ensure they remain within the projected costs and produce the desired revenues.

Employment Requirements

According to the BLS and December 2013 jobs ads from Monster.com, employers typically prefer applicants to hold a bachelor's degree in a field related to marketing or business. Employers may also want you to have experience with the Internet and search engines. You should be skilled with computers, Internet research, and teamwork strategies. Organization and communication skills are also valued in this field.

In some cases, you may need to have computer programming skills. You may also be required to know how to maintain and manage a website. Knowledge of computer word processing programs is typically desired as well.

Job Outlook and Salary Information

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that marketing management positions would increase at a normal rate of 10% from 2016-2026, although competition for jobs should be fierce due to the popularity of the field (www.bls.gov). According to PayScale.com, most Internet marketing managers earned between $36,000 and $74,000 per year as of June 2019.
