About Northern Illinois University

What does NIU Online have to offer? Nine bachelor's degree, eleven master's degree, and two doctoral degree programs. You could also choose from nine undergraduate and graduate certificates. While some programs require clinicals or once-per-year weeklong face-to-face residencies, the classwork is conducted 100% online.

If you're interested in a graduate degree in education, NIU Online has three Master of Science in Education options designed to prepare you for careers as school business managers, educational technology specialists, or program evaluators; a Master of Science in Art Education program is also offered. A Doctor of Education program that focuses on preparing students to pursue administrative positions in community colleges is also available. U.S. News and World Report ranked NIU's online graduate education program #9 among national universities in 2018.

Those holding an associate's degree in nursing could obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing entirely online at NIU. Or, registered RNs in the state of Illinois who have a bachelor's and who wish to complete advanced studies to prepare for careers as family nurse practitioners or nurse educators could choose the online M.S. in Nursing. A full-time internship coordinator assists with clinical placements for this program.

Additional online program options include undergraduate degrees in marketing, political science, health sciences, technology, applied management, and general studies, while other master's degree program options include public administration, public health, data analytics, digital marketing, industrial management, and systems engineering. Graduate certificates are offered online in such areas as data science for business, geographic information analysis, trauma-informed counseling, eating disorders and obesity, and public management. Before starting, NIU Online gives you the opportunity to try a sample online class.

Student Testimonials

''The online NIU M.P.H. program does not feel 'online' at all. The teachers make the classes interactive and even have collaborative class sessions. Schoolwork is able to be completed around my 40-hour a week work schedule. I am so thankful I chose the NIU program!''

''The Academic Advising Center has helped me achieve my goals at NIU by guiding and advising me. As a first-year college student, things seemed difficult. While having so many advisors around to help me, things went by with ease.''
