Goodwin College opened up in 1999 as a private, not-for-profit vocational institution. Although the school offers mostly associate degree and certificate programs, Goodwin College has achieved the accreditation necessary for offering some bachelor's degree programs as well. <p>Although Goodwin College is an unranked school, the <i>U.S. News & World Report</i> does not often review institutions that are focused on mainly vocational programs. Looking at total expenses reported to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which included tuition and fees, books, and other living expenses, the average cost of attending Goodwin College was $37,200 in the 2011-2012 school year. This was a little cheaper than the average for private not-for-profit schools. The total for books, supplies, tuition and fees was $20,400 in the 2011-2012 school year, per the NCES; the other $16,800 reflected the estimated average living expenses accrued by most students in that area.

<p>Goodwin College might be expensive, but as a private institution, it offers a low student-to-faculty ratio of only 13:1, better than the national average of 16:1. Goodwin College tries to accommodate working adults, offering classes in the evenings and on weekends. Since Goodwin is a commuter campus focused on vocational degree programs, it offers no on-campus housing. <p>Goodwin College accepts student applications on a year-round basis; when you apply, you work one-on-one with an admissions specialist, according to the school's website. Requirements for admission include filling out an application, having an interview with an admissions staff member, paying fees, submitting high school or college transcripts and showing proof of recent immunizations. Goodwin College also requires applicants to take the Accuplacer™ aptitude test to verify each student's skill level, although students who have scored high enough on the SATs may not be required to take aptitude tests.

<p>Records on the NCES from the 2010-2011 school year indicated that 99% of Goodwin College students received some form of financial aid. During that same year, 97% of students receiving aid received either scholarships or grants, and the average amount received was $6,511 per student. That same school year, 74% of students were awarded institutional scholarships or grants, and the average amount received was $3,283. A high majority, 90% of students, still took out loans to help pay for college. During the 2010-2011 school year, the average amount of each student loan was $7,437.

<p>As of 2013, Goodwin College's website indicated that there were 15 student organizations and clubs on campus, and four of those clubs were connected directly to Goodwin College sports teams. According to the College Board, there are no fraternities or sororities on campus.

<p>Goodwin College offers some useful student services, including career counseling, disability services and personal counseling. The College Board reports that the institution also offers substance abuse counseling, tutoring, veterans' services and remedial instruction. Currently there is only one library on campus, but students can borrow research materials from other college campuses using interlibrary loans. According to the College Board, Goodwin College is only five miles away from Hartford, the state capital of Connecticut. As of 2010, the NCES reported the following statistics for ethnic diversity at Goodwin College: 52% White, 24% African-American, 19% Hispanic or Latino and two percent Asian.
