In addition, the American Institute for Economic Research ranked the Greater Hartford area 10th on its list of best mid-size metro locations for college students. </p> <p>UH offers 82 bachelor's programs, 10 associate's degrees, 28 graduate degrees, and seven certificates or diplomas. Its programs are organized within seven different colleges and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences; the Barney School of Business; the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions; Hilyer College; the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture; the Hartford Art School; and the Hartt School. </p> <p>UH's acceptance rate was 41% in 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). This is lower than the 63.8% national acceptance rate reported in 2011 by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), meaning UH is slightly more selective than average. According to NCES, 40% of UH students who enrolled in 2006 had graduated by 2010, which is exactly the same as the average 4-year national graduation rate of 40% (reported by <i>USNWR</i>). </p> <p>Tuition, fees, room and board at UH were reported to be $46,840 in the 2012-2013 year, according to the NCES. Nationwide, the average yearly cost to attend a private school in that year was $39,518, according to College Board. This makes UH a bit more expensive than comparable schools. </p> <h2 id="section---GettingInFinancialAid"> Getting In &amp; Financial Aid</h2> <p>To apply to UH, you need to submit a transcript, letter of recommendation, and SAT or ACT scores. Some colleges have additional requirements, such as an audition or portfolio submission. In 2011, the middle 50% for SAT scores ranged from 470-570 in reading and 480-590 in math, according to NCES. The College Board (TCB) reported the middle 50% of ACT scores as ranging from 19-25. You can apply and pay the required $35 application fee online or through the mail. </p> <p>Financial aid is available through federal, state, and university sources in the form of grants, loans, work-study, and scholarships. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) deadline is February 1 for new students and May 1 for returning students, according to UH. According to TCB, the average first-year financial aid package in 2011 was $16,846. Four housing options are available on campus, all of which have free wireless internet, and some housing is reserved for freshmen. Upperclassmen have a choice of standard residence halls or apartment-style housing. As of 2013, UH's housing rates varied between $5,814 a year (for triple occupation in complexes A-F or in Hawk Hall) to $10,098 per year (the single occupation rate in Park River apartments). Meal costs range from $1,078 a year for a commuter plan to $6,570 for a premium kosher plan. </p> <p>If you want to travel off-campus for your weekend recreation, a shuttle takes students from campus to West Hartford Center, which features over 100 shops and restaurants as well as year-round cultural activities.
