As of 2011, the student-to-faculty ratio was 22 to 1 and 37% of instructors were teaching assistants, reports the NCES. You may need to be proactive in getting the attention of faculty; however, if you need extra help, you can take advantage of the services offered by the Academic Success Center. </p> <p>UNLV's proximity to the Las Vegas Strip - 1.5 miles - enables students interested in the tourism and gaming industries to take advantage of valuable resources. The William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration is home to the Caesars Hospitality Research Center. This college also offers a PGA-approved Golf Management major. </p> <p>It's important to note that according to the NCES, 14% of the students who began in 2005 graduated within four years, which is considerably lower than the national average. About 39% of students graduated in six years. </p> <p>However, the university has produced some outstanding graduates. In 2012, researchers from UNLV - some of whom were former students - found fossil remains revealing the first evidence of an extinct wolf species in Nevada. During the same year, two UNLV seniors won top prize in the Washington Media Scholars Foundation Case Competition. </p> <h2 id="section---AdmissionsFinancialAidAtUniversityOfNevadaLasVegas"> Admissions &amp; Financial Aid at University of Nevada - Las Vegas</h2> <p>To be considered for fall admission, you must submit your application by July 1. Admission is based on your high school coursework, GPA and standardized test scores. You'll be notified of your admission status within 7-10 days of the university receiving your completed application. </p> <p>According to the NCES, the total cost of attending UNLV, including all school and living expenses, was $21,559 for in-state students and $35,469 for out-of-state students for the 2012-2013 school year. Both are higher than the national averages of $17,860 and $30,911, respectively. You can offset the cost by applying for financial aid. UNLV encourages students to submit the FAFSA by February 1. </p> <p>According to <i>U.S. News and World Report,</i> the average financial aid award at UNLV was slightly more than $5,000 as of 2011. In addition, 55% of full-time undergraduates received some sort of financial aid during that year. <i>U.S. News and World Report</i> also found that the average total indebtedness of the 2011 graduating class was $20,896 - more than $5,000 lower than the national average estimated by the Project on Student Debt. To help freshmen acclimate to their new surroundings, the school requires that students coming from outside of Las Vegas and its surrounding areas live on campus for the first year. Dayton Hall is reserved for first-year students. The school has one main library and four branch libraries for law, music, architecture and curriculum materials. </p> <p>At UNLV, you'll be able to cheer as a fan or become a student athlete. The UNLV Rebels compete in 17 NCAA Division I sports, as well as intramural sports. You also can join one of nearly 200 student organizations. You may decide to get involved with community service organizations, such as the Rebel Service Council, Circle K International or the Las Vegas Rotaract Club.
