All states require marriage and family counselors to have a license, which typically requires a certain number of supervised clinical hours, in addition to a master's degree, the completion of a state exam and continuing education credits. Working in substance abuse, on the other hand, may only require a high school diploma and certification. </p> <p>A voluntary National Certified Counselor credential is also available through the National Board for Certified Counselors.
