Online Aesthetics Courses
Because aesthetics is a hands-on field, you probably won't be able to take online courses. Aestheticians must be state licensed in order to perform beauty treatments. Keep reading for more information about aesthetics classes and what you'll study.
What Will I Learn?
Aesthetics programs prepare you to become a licensed skin care specialist, so you'll take courses that cover both scientific and artistic aspects of the profession. You'll work with skin care products and equipment to gain practical experience. Anatomy and physiology courses that focus on the skin are usually included in an aesthetics curriculum. You'll also take courses that examine specific skin care procedures, such as exfoliations, waxes, facials and body wraps.
Business courses that focus on salon management, sales and marketing may also be included. Most programs require you to spend time working in a student-run salon that is part of the school's program. There, you'll be able to work with the public performing a variety of beauty treatments. Additional topics might include:
Cosmetology Theory
Students in this course will learn about the basic terminology related to salon services. Topics include hygiene, skin diseases, esthetics and the use of nail technology.
Shop Management and Customer Relations
This course will explore the skills that are necessary for communicating with clients. You'll also learn about bookkeeping techniques, business ethics and conflict management.
Chemical Facials
This course will teach students about the basic concepts of chemical peels. Topics include chemical peel uses, chemical peeling agents, and physiological impacts on the skin.
Eyebrows and Eyelashes
Eyebrow shaping, tweezing and waxing techniques. Students can also learn how to perform eyelash makeup theories.
Anatomy and Physiology
Students will cover basic concepts associated with the human anatomy in addition to the physiology and bacteriology of skin. Medical treatments for acne will also be covered.
Can I Take Aesthetics Courses Online?
Aesthetics (or esthetics) courses typically involve laboratory and salon-based experiences, so there aren't many opportunities for online learning specifically in aesthetics. However, select cosmetology programs offered general cosmetology classes online, which provide fundamental information on diseases and disorders of the nails, scalp and skin. Additionally, some private beauty schools have educational videos that are available online for a membership fee to those in the cosmetology industry.
