Is Global Marketing For Me?

Career Overview

Global marketing is a field that seeks to control product positioning and company communication across a variety of cultural barriers. As a professional in this field, you may work with different international companies coordinating market research, product development, sales strategies and public relations efforts. Because networking and high visibility are both extremely important aspects of the field, global marketing professionals travel quite often, as well as work many evenings and weekends.

Employment Outlook and Salary Statistics

If you're interested in working in the field of global marketing, you should expect strong job competition over the next several years. According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for advertising, marketing and promotions managers is expected to grow 12% over the 2012-2022 decade (www.bls.gov). Individuals who can come up with fresh new ideas, especially those that involve the Internet and new media, should expect the best opportunities. The BLS also reported that marketing managers earned an annual average salary of $129,870 in May 2012.

How Can I Work in Global Marketing?

Undergraduate Education

Though some degrees in global marketing do exist, those interested in pursuing this field typically earn at least a bachelor's degree in business or marketing. In these types of programs, students learn how to apply marketing principles, as well as how to control communication within a company and how to identify global trends within the industry. Since global marketers must be able to communicate across cultural lines, international studies are an important part of the typical curriculum.

The rest of the curriculum usually covers topics in marketing, such as promotions, advertising, product positioning, research, consumer behavior and psychology. Many regular marketing and business degree programs include courses in global marketing.

Graduate Studies

Some schools also offer master's degree programs in international business, which typically allow students to take specialized courses in global marketing. Programs at this level may include courses such as global strategy, import/export principles, business modeling, digital marketing, new product development and project management. Earning your master's degree may be beneficial for those pursuing high-level executive positions or careers in academia.
