The degree must have been earned from an accredited college or university in order to be accepted by the Indiana Department of Education. The Indiana Department of Education maintains a list of accredited institutions that offer approved educator preparation programs. </p> <h3 id="section---AssessmentRequirements">Assessment Requirements</h3> <p>While candidates are no longer required to pass the Core Academic Skills Assessment (CASA) tests in Reading, Writing and Mathematics for licensure, certain educator preparation programs may require them. For licensure, candidates will need to pass pedagogy and content area assessments provided by Pearson. For a license specific to the Visual Arts, the candidate would need to pass the P-12 pedagogy assessment as well as Fine Arts - Visual Arts content area assessment. Candidates are able to register online for these assessments where they will be given further information about testing dates and approved testing centers. Test results will be sent to the candidate, the Indiana Department of Education and the college or university the candidate stated on their application. </p> <h3 id="section---AdditionalTrainingRequirements">Additional Training Requirements</h3> <p>In order to gain the Initial Practitioner license, the candidate must complete Suicide Prevention Training and CPR Training. Suicide Prevention Training must cover how to identify if a child is considering suicide and what to do to prevent suicide. This training is offered by a number of providers and there are some suggestions on the Indiana Department of Education website. The candidate will be required to show a certificate as proof of training when applying for licensure. </p> <p>The candidate will also need to be trained in the following areas: </p> <ul><li>Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which included a test demonstration on a mannequin </li><li>Removing a foreign body obstructing an airway, and the Heimlich Maneuver </li><li>The use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) </li></ul><p>The candidate will need to have a valid certificate from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association or other providers as approved by the Indiana Department of Education. </p> <h3 id="section---ApplicationProcess">Application Process</h3> <p>To initiate the application process for the Initial Practitioner license, the candidate must get a recommendation for the licensing advisor at their college or university after they have graduated from the educator preparation program. The application process can then be completed through the LVIS online portal on the Indiana Department of Education website. The applicant is also able to pay the $35 application fee and upload the relevant documents through the online portal. </p> <h3 id="section---LicenseInformation">License Information</h3> <p>The Initial Practitioner license is valid for two years and can either be renewed or converted to a Proficient Practitioner license. To renew the Initial Practitioner license for the first two times, the educator only needs to submit an application. The third time, they will need to submit a 90-point professional growth plan or pass the relevant assessment. To convert to the five-year Proficient Practitioner license, the educator only needs to complete two years teaching full-time at an accredited institution.</p>
