After teaching candidates collect documented proof of passing all certification tests and exams, proof of completion of a preparation program, proof of all required emergency training, and a completed application from the Indiana Department of Education, along with application fees, they will be certified with an Initial Practitioner license. This license has a two-year validity period, after which it can be upgraded to a 5-year Proficient Practitioner license. While working with an Initial Practitioner license, teachers should complete either an Indiana Mentor and Assessment Program (IMAP) or a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) in order to upgrade to a Proficient Practitioner license.

Indiana Mentor and Assessment Program

The Indiana Mentor and Assessment Program, or IMAP, is one route to upgrading the Initial Practitioner License. This program takes place during the validity period of the Initial Practitioner license, and those who fail to enroll will either have to renew their IP license or complete a 40 point Professional Growth Plan. The IMAP is a program that will assess your teaching abilities and certify you for a Proficient Practitioner license. As well as passing the classroom assessment, teachers will need to have a letter of Completion from your Building Level Administrator (BLA)/Principal.

Professional Growth Plan

The Professional Growth Plan (PGP) has three levels, each requiring a different amount of points depending on what license you are upgrading two and upgrading from. To upgrade from an IP to a PP license, you will need to complete a 40 point plan. A PGP is the record of an individual teacher's development. A teacher can achieve PGP points through attending workshops and conferences, participating in committee work and school improvement plans, as well as completing courses designed to keep teachers up to date with current teaching trends and educational reforms.

Once a teacher is certified with a Proficient Practitioner License, they will have to renew their PP license every five years. This can be done through a 90 point PGP plan. Similar to the process of upgrading the IP license, this 90 point plan also consists of attending workshops and conferences, participating in committees and school improvement projects, and completing coursework for staying up to date in teaching methodology. Renewal applicants may also choose to renew through 6 hours of college coursework at a regionally accredited university in the areas of education or their specific field of certification. Applicants also have the option of using college coursework for points in a 90 point PGP in order to do a combination of college coursework and the other methods of earning PGP points.
