What You Need to Know

In order to work as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), you must earn a certificate in the field or successfully complete an accredited LPN program, before taking the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). There are a number of public schools in or near Orlando that offer qualifying certificate and diploma programs; some are two-year schools and others are four-year universities. Generally speaking, full-time students should be able to complete an LPN program in about a year; part-time students are able to graduate in about 18 months. Because of the nature of the work, application requirements could include background checks, drug screenings, and proof of physical health and immunizations, before students are able to take any classes with clinical elements.

Schools Offering LPN Certificate Programs in the Orlando, FL, Area

Lake Technical College

Lake Technical Center offers a practical nursing program that can be taken during the day, in the evening or part-time. The curriculum includes classroom, laboratory and clinical education. The typical breakdown of hours is 671 for classroom and labs and 679 for clinical training. The clinical training takes place at several facilities, including Florida Hospital/Waterman and South Lake Hospital. Class officers are elected in the third month of the program. If elected, you'll gain leadership experience.

Orlando Tech

The practical nursing program at Orlando Tech prepares you to work in hospitals, clinics and various medical settings under the supervision of registered nurses. You'll learn about various types of nursing, such as obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics and individual, family and community health nursing. You can transfer ten credits from this program toward an associate nursing degree if you wish to advance your studies. The 1,350-hour curriculum is divided between 675 hours of coursework and labs and 675 hours of clinical rotations. If you have a CNA certificate, you can have the core portion waived.

Some of the topics covered include child nursing and medical/surgical nursing. The clinical education allows you take what you learned in class and put it toward real-life situations.

Some of the topics you'll learn about include family and community health concepts, mental health concepts and legal aspects of practice. TECO offers both a full-time day and part-time evening program.
