Associate's Degree Programs

Internet technology may be available as its own degree field or as an area of specialization within a computer and information science degree program. Programs generally award the Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science and cover foundational knowledge of how the Internet works and how web content is created, modified, displayed and measured.

You may be able to specialize in a subfield like business or computer programming. You'll learn basic computer networking concepts, publishing to the web, electronic commerce, web marketing, database management systems, PHP programming, Apache web server management, JavaScript, UNIX and Linux. Most programs also train you to plan, budget and implement relevant projects.

Bachelor's Degree Programs

Programs like the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Internet Technology or B.S. in Computer Technology degree with an Internet technology track can teach you how to use Internet technologies and applications for problem solving. You're taught to draw on your know-how of computer hardware, software operations and application development to define a problem and then design, develop and implement solutions, followed up by assessment, evaluation and revision as necessary.

The curriculum will generally stress web pages, online marketing and online databases. Course topics may include computer science and computer operating systems, object-oriented design and programming, Internet networking, software engineering, online marketing, communications law and ethics, computer animation and computer graphics. Schools may offer you the opportunity to participate in co-op work experiences or internships. Some schools also have labs for student access.

Graduate Studies

Graduate programs, such as the Master of Internet Technology, typically offer interdisciplinary studies that bridge business and technology. Some programs offer a specialization like e-commerce or network administration. You may be required to complete a capstone experience, while some programs may require a master's thesis. Core classes can include computer networks, information security, information systems, network-based application development, database management, data mining and project management.
