Essential Information

Aspiring pharmacists in California must complete a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. A bachelor's degree is the main prerequisite for these programs, which take 3-4 years to complete. Students in a Pharm.D. program take didactic classes and also learn how to work with patients. Some California schools also offer master's degree programs in pharmaceutical sciences, and these can prepare graduates to work in government or research positions.

University of Southern California

Located in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California will ready pharmaceutical sciences students for careers in academia, government and industry. You'll be instructed on drug delivery, chemistry, cell biology, proteomics and drug metabolism. Students will have the option of completing either a literature review or a research project before earning their degree; either option requires a 50-100 page thesis.

Loma Linda University

Loma Linda University is a Christian institute with a PharmD program where you'll learn how to care for individual patients in addition to a population. The fully accredited program features courses on public health, pharmacy law, ethics, medicinal chemistry and pharmacokinetics. Your fourth year of the program will consist entirely of advanced practice experience rotations.
